What is permanent makeup?

A gentle way to define your brows, eyes or lips without reaching for makeup every morning. Here is exactly how it works, how long it lasts and what to expect while it heals.

Permanent makeup, also known as micropigmentation or cosmetic tattooing, enhances your natural features by implanting small amounts of pigment into the upper layers of the skin.

It's the perfect option for anyone looking to define their brows, eyes or lips without the need for daily makeup. The result is long-lasting, natural, and needs very little maintenance.

The process

Every treatment starts with a free consultation, where we talk through the look you want, check your skin type and medical history, and carry out a patch test. Postal patch tests are available, so you don't always need to travel in beforehand.

On the day, the shape is mapped to suit your features and adjusted together until you're happy with it. Pigments are then mixed to complement your skin tone and undertone. Most clients describe the sensation as minimal, similar to light scratching, and we take breaks whenever you need them. Brows take around 2 to 2.5 hours, eyeliner 1.5 to 2 hours, and lips 2 to 3 hours - including consent forms, mapping and your aftercare discussion.

How long it lasts

Results vary with skin type, lifestyle and aftercare, but permanent makeup typically lasts between 1-3 years. Over time the pigment gradually fades, so a colour boost every 12 to 18 months keeps your look fresh. Existing clients receive up to 50% off colour boosts within 12 months.

Every treatment also includes a 6-week top-up. Six weeks after your first appointment we refine any areas that softened while healing, so the finished result is even and long-lasting.

Aftercare

Initial healing takes about 7 to 14 days, and the area will look darker and bolder at first before it settles. Full healing, when the pigment reaches its true colour, takes up to 6 weeks.

During healing, keep the area clean and dry, avoid picking or scratching any flaking, and skip swimming, saunas, sunbeds and heavy sweating. Keep makeup and skincare away from the treated area, use sun protection once healed, and follow the written instructions in your aftercare kit. Looking after it properly extends the life of your permanent makeup - and with your recommended top-ups, your results keep looking fresh.
